History

Hello my name is Chernobil..

I don't want to be adopted, because I already have a home and that is the animal refuge center “Marina Baixa” in Benidorm.

When I arrived here in 1993 I was barely 2 months old. I was left behind in a box in front of the door of the police station even though I surely am a real fox Terrier Terrier!

During a visit at the veterinary clinic I heard that I had atrofie at my vertebra through which one of my hind legs was paralyzed. I heard that they said they couldn't not operate on me and that I also couldn't stay in a cage, because I might possibly break my back bone in there. In expectation of the developments, one of the nurses cared for me in her house. I, an invalid dog with not a lot of chance of survival.

I was confused, left alone, and crippled...

But that couldn't stop me! I wasn't ready to die and had many questions, yet to be answered.

The first weeks I couldn't go out of the house. But I was far to impatient and wanted to see what was happening behind the door. I heard other dogs bark. And saw strange animals that on an exceptional elegant manner leapt on the pieces of furniture when I was in the neighborhood. Later on I found out that these animals are cats. I learned to respect them, because the one who wants to bite them can count on trouble. There are cats everywhere around here, in the house, in the office, also in the clinic sometimes, on the roof of the animalshelter and in the cats holding of course.
I will come back to that later on.

With time, I slowly became myself more strongly and my body grew while my paralyzed hind leg remained. I couldn't move very fast but that couldn't stop me from investigating. The first thing that I saw was all those dogs in kennels who where all barking at me. I stiffened, swallowed, but went to them.

One by one they told me their story, ........there sad story:

-They brought me here because they said that the house began to smell like dog.
-And they've brought me here because I grew to big.
-My bosses got a baby and although I madly love children they were fearfull that I would harm her.
-My bosses were even more awful, I torn down a curtain and they threw me on the street without furtherer explanation.
-Mine told me that they were going to live somewhere else and couldn't take me with them.

I couldn't listen to it any longer, my heart was broken and I went in a room where some people were talking. I hid quietly under the table. My thoughts were at all those sad stories. When discovered I that it yet another dog was there. She said "don't despair, the first day is quite difficult but we are all glad that we are here instead of being with people who don't want us".

They treat us as you would treat us. We have food, water and they clean our cage each day. We have a roof that us protect against cold, heat and rain. When we come in wounded or ill the veterinarian comes to check on us and help us. And most importantly they try to to find a new home for us in witch we can stay for the rest of our life. The dog that spoke to me was Linda she lived longer than I did in the animalshelter. I don't think anybody remembers how she got here. For a long time we were inseparable. She made me see how important the work of the animalshelter that since 1972 exists is.

On these photographs you can see my house and can you see how large it is. We also have a plan on this website how you can visit us.

The tombstone that you see below is from the above-mentioned Linda, It's a small homage for the dogs that live and have lived here in the .
